7 Easy Steps On How To Start a WordPress Blog On Bluehost
I started Make Real Cents in August of 2016 and it has literally been one of the best decisions I have ever made as an adult. I started the blog for a few reasons 1.) I wanted to help the people in the struggle, just like me, who sucked with money and 2.) I wanted a creative way to document my own personal financial journey. Looking back, the only thing I regret is not starting it sooner.
December 2017 was the first time I attempted to monetize the blog and it worked! My aim was to make at least $1 dollar from blogging and I actually ended up making $12 (humble small beginnings, I know). I figured that if I can passively make one dollar by sitting on the beach in Mexico without doing a single thing, then the earning potential from blogging is limitless.
A good friend of mine also started his blog, Levitate Style, in 2013 as a side hustle while working full time for an investment bank. Within 4 years of creating his blog, he was able to quit his well paying job with a wall street firm to travel and blog full time. You can find out all about his journey by checking out the interview I did with him – From Wall Street to Blogging Full Time Before the Age of 30.
With a few initial start-up costs, you can also create a blog and start generating passive income as soon as today. Whether you have ideas to blog about cat mom problems, high fashion, or cooking, what’s stopping you from CREATING A BLOG TODAY?If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog but haven’t been sure how to go about it, here is a quick 7 step guide to help you get started. Plus, if you sign up using any of my Bluehost links below, I get a nice referral bonus at no charge to you! It’s a win win.
1.) Select a Plan by Clicking here
You will need to select a plan that suits your budget. I recommend and use bluehost.com to host my website. They offer great packages, have great customer service and make it super easy to get your blog up and running.
Now remember, the earning potential from blogging is limitless and does require a small investment up front but the long-term ROI (return on investment) is priceless! Creating a free blog with Blogger or wordpress.com may hurt your chances later on down the road (even when it comes to advertising and changing the look of your website etc) and people will know a “free” website when they see it. By paying for hosting, at a minimum, you are telling your audience that you take what you do seriously. Serious enough to invest time, money, and energy into something you feel is better than Free99 which is your content.
2.) Create a domain name
When you sign up for a 12-month hosting package with Bluehost, a free domain is included in your purchase. You’ll want to select a domain name that fits your style, makes sense for your site, and will ultimately be how you tell people to find your stuff. You may want to stray away from YoMamaSoOld.com unless your blog will be about yo mama jokes. If that’s the case, then a yo mama domain makes sense for what you are trying to do.
sidenote: I purchased my domain name through GoDaddy.com without realizing that I could have gotten one for free* through Bluehost.com.
Use Bluehost’s search function under “new domain” to find out if the domain you want is available. If not, they provide you with a few alternative options/ combinations.
3.) Create your account and complete your registration
You will need to enter some personal information, select your hosting package, set up payment stuff, and all that jazz.
4.) Connect your domain and hosting service
If you buy your domain through BlueHost, then your domain will be ready (processed) within a few hours, in most circumstances.
If you purchased your domain prior to setting up your Bluehost account (e.g. GoDaddy), you will need to point your domain to your hosting account by modifying your DNS Nameserver.
1.) Log onto your GoDaddy.com Account Manager.
2.) Go to the DNS Management page.
3.) Under “Nameservers”, click “Change”.
4.) Enter the following into the spaces provided-
ns1.bluehost.com & ns2.bluehost.com
Then click Save Changes at the bottom.
5.) Then you will need to add the domain your purchased to your Bluehost account by logging into Bluehost, clicking on “Domains” on the far left, entering in your domain, selecting “addon”, and then clicking “assign this domain” at the bottom.
*Please note that it may take a few hours to fully update.
5.) Install WordPress (WP)
Click here for their 7 easy step guide on installing WP. (https://my.bluehost.com/hosting/help/wp_install or https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/wordpress). You will need to log into your Bluehost account, select “websites” on the left, and then click “install wordpress”.
6.) Log into your site
Once WordPress is installed, on the left-hand side of your BlueHost account, click on the link “My Sites”. You will then click on “Log in to WordPress”. Once you are logged into your site, you will be able to browse and select a blog template that you find by clicking on the “appearance” tab and then clicking on “template”.
7.) Add a post
If you want to start posting right away, drag your mouse over to “Post” and select “Add New”. Give your post a title, some content, and once its ready hit “Publish” and BAM, your first ever blog post is live for the world to see.
Like I said earlier, looking back, I only regret not starting sooner. I love receiving emails from my followers about how my story and this blog is inspiring them to tackle their finances. There is nothing more rewarding than receiving messages from people I haven’t spoken to in years or complete strangers, tell me how much they enjoy reading Make Real Cents.
Don’t have the same regrets as me, if you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, then there is no better time than now!
